Making sure your vehicles are compliant and safe while on the road is essential to the success of any business. MOT testing and regular servicing are key ways to make sure your vehicles are roadworthy, testing every aspect of your vehicle.
Another important element to be tested on large commercial vehicles is the tachograph, which is a legal requirement to have installed. Join Transcare as we explore the topic of tachograph repairs and calibration.
What Is A Tachograph?
A tachograph is a device that automatically records the speed, distance and driving habits of a vehicle and its driver. It is automatically activated when the vehicle is in motion and consists of a sender unit mounted to the gearbox, the tachograph head and a recording medium.
The Importance of Tachograph Calibration
The first reason why tachograph calibration is so important is because it helps drivers adhere to the legal obligations surrounding workers’ hours and rest periods while driving. Because of this, calibration is vital to ensure all of the data collected is accurate.
Accurate data can also be used to ensure operational efficiency. The data provided from the tachograph can be used to ensure your business is running efficiently and can help you make decisions that can help to improve this.
What Happens During Tachograph Calibration?
Tachograph calibration is a fairly simple process, which involves checking the tachograph’s accuracy and adjusting it to make sure that it is recording data properly. Tachograph calibration must be performed by either the vehicle manufacturer or at an approved tachograph calibration centre.
When Do I Need Tachograph Repair & Calibration?
You can have either an analogue or digital tachograph, and the time it takes for inspections and recalibration differs depending on this. Analogue tachographs must be inspected every 2 years and recalibrated every 6, whilst digital tachographs must be recalibrated every two years.
They must also be recalibrated after any alterations to the circumference of the tyres, if the vehicle registration number changes, after any tachograph equipment repair and if the UTC is out by more than 20 minutes.
